Gate vehicle loop detector troubleshooting & replacement

Vehicle loops help a gate controller detect vehicles, but a broken pavement loop is not the only cause of missed detection. The loop wire, lead-in, detector module, settings and controller inputs need to be checked as a system.

What to evaluate

Decisions that shape the system

01

Symptoms worth recording

Does the gate close on vehicles, stay open, ignore cars at one position or fail only in wet weather? Note which lane and loop are involved.

02

Test before cutting pavement

A technician can inspect detector status and measure the loop circuit before deciding whether the buried wire or detector needs replacement.

03

Replacement scope

If the pavement loop has failed, plan the cut path, wire protection, lead-in route, sealant and post-install detection test. Pavement condition and traffic control affect the work.

04

Coordinate with safety devices

A vehicle detection loop has a different role from photo eyes and other entrapment protection. A complete repair checks how all inputs interact.

Common questions

Can the detector module be replaced without cutting pavement?

Sometimes. Test results determine whether the fault is the plug-in detector, wiring or the buried loop.

Is a loop the same as a safety sensor?

No. Vehicle detection and entrapment protection have different functions; the complete gate system must be evaluated.
